(8 April 2019, Honolulu, Hawaii) – The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu joined in the celebration of National Women’s Month last March 2019 and the 15th Women with Disabilities Day Celebration last 25 March 2019.

In observance of Women’s Month, the Consulate staff wore purple to raise awareness and interest among the public regarding gender and development issues. Flyers regarding Magna Carta of Women’s Rights were distributed at the consular area.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Mme. Araceli C. Jimeno, spouse of Consul General Joselito A. Jimeno, hosted a luncheon on 8 March 2019 at the official residence. Invited guests include the spouses of the Consular Corps in Hawaii, female business leaders, and the ladies of the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu. Mme. Jimeno noted that International Women’s Day is an opportunity to highlight the special bonds between women. Guests informally shared stories about themselves and women who have inspired them.

As part of the Global Filipino Campaign, the Consulate also featured the story of Hawaii State Senator Donna Mercado Kim. Senator Mercado Kim served Hawaii Legislature and Honolulu City Council for more than 35 uninterrupted years. The story of Senator Mercado is one that the Consulate hope will inspire Filipinas and young leaders of Filipino descent to pursue their dreams and passion.

For the 15th Women with Disabilities Day Celebration, the Consulate shared information regarding the theme for this year’s celebration - "Sabay-sabay, Pantay-pantay sa Pag-unlad ng mga Kababaihang May Kapansanan".

Pursuant to Proclamation No. 227 s. 1988, March has been designated as the National Women's Month. Philippine Proclamation No. 744, meanwhile, declared the last Monday of March of every year as Women with Disabilities Day. (END)
