The Consular Corps in Hawaii, in cooperation with the East-West Center, organized a lecture on North Korea entitled: “Hard Targets: Sanctions, Inducements and the Case of North Korea” on 8 August 2017 at the East-West Center.

Mr. Marcus Noland, East West Center Senior Fellow and Executive Vice-President and Director of Studies, Peterson Institute for International Economics based in Washington D.C. gave the luncheon briefing before members of Hawaii’s Consular Corps.

The lecture was one of the activities organized by the Consular Corps of Hawaii this year under the leadership of Philippine Consul General Gina Jamoralin as its current Dean.

As an economic expert, Mr. Noland discussed the effectiveness of sanctions against North Korea and how the international community’s actions affect the regime. The lecture is a preview of a new book by Noland and Stephen Haggard on North Korea of the same title which analyzes the role of economic incentives in the bargaining around DPRK’s nuclear program.

At the end of the lecture, Consul General Jamoralin thanked Mr. Noland for his interesting and relevant lecture and Dr. Richard Vuylsteke, President of East-West Center for collaborating with the Consular Corps in making the event possible. (END).
