Press Release 92-2016

For the first time since the creation of the Filipino American Youth Leadership Program (FYLPro) in 2, two (2) young Filipino Americans have been selected from Hawaii to take part as 2 of the ten (10) delegates to the 5th FYLPro which will be held in the Philippines from 24 November to 02 December 2016.

The 2 delegates are Mr. Brandon dela Cruz, Director of Marketing of L&L Franchise, Inc and President-elect of the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii for 2017; and Ms. Elizabeth Obod Frilles, an educator from Olomana School and the recipient of the 2015 Windward District Teacher of the Year. Both are from Oahu and will join the other eight (8) delegates from Chicago, Daly City, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Washington DC, and Guam.

Among the criteria used to evaluate the applications were scholastic achievements and other accolades, leadership skills, accomplishments, active involvement in school, civic, political, business and other organizations as well as their vision, innovativeness and commitment to making a difference in the Philippines, within the Filipino-American community, and the FYLPro as an organization composed of and run by its 40 alumni.

Launched in 2012 as a youth-oriented project of former Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr., FYLPro aims to tap outstanding young Filipino-Americans who possess a sincere desire to be engaged in their respective communities and be a part of the Philippines’ growth story. The annual immersion program in the Philippines will afford them the opportunity to meet and dialogue with the highest officials and policymakers of the country, leaders of industry, legislators, media, artists and cultural experts, entrepreneurs (both traditional and social), as well as innovators in different fields.

Mr. dela Cruz and Ms. Frilles join the roster of past FYLPro delegates from Hawaii, namely: Ms. Kit Zulueta, Maui (2012); Mr. Randy Cortez, Oahu (2013); Atty. Michael Dahilig, Kauai (2014); and Representative Ty Cullen, Oahu (2015). END.
