The Commander of Navy Region Hawaii oversees the US Navy’s largest and most strategic island base in the Pacific, home to Pacific combatant, component and submarine force command headquarters. The first official naval base in Hawaii was established in 1899 as Naval Station Honolulu. In 1908, the US Congress authorized funds for the construction of a coaling station and shipyard which later on became a world class naval base in Hawaii. Pearl Harbor Naval Station was dedicated August 21, 1919 by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels. The 14th Naval District commander was responsible for the operation and support of all naval facilities in the Hawaiian islands as Pearl Harbor later grew to become America’s key repair and replenishment base in the Pacific. The Navy Region Hawaii has supported Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in Asia. (source: US Navy, History of Navy Region Hawaii)

In 2010, Naval Station Pearl Harbor joined with Hickam Air Force Base to become Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam as a single joint installation to support both air and sea missions in the Pacific. END
