22/09/2014: ADVISORY ON LAVA FLOW: COUNTY OF HAWAII

ADVISORY ON LAVA FLOW, COUNTY OF HAWAII

The Philippine Consulate General would like to advise the public of the following updates with regard to the Kilauea lava flow in the County of Hawaii, based on news reports and daily issuances provided by the Office of Councilmember Greggor Ilagan, 4th District (Puna Makai):

  • Per assessment made by Hawaii County of Civil Defense on 21 September, surface lava flow has slowed considerably and has advanced approximately 75 yards since 20 September. No evacuation is needed at this time and area residents will be given adequate notice to safely evacuate should that be necessary.
  • The current lava flow had moved into lighter vegetation and had started a brush fire in a remote area above Apa’a Road to the west of Highway 130. No structures or properties are threatened. The Hawaii Fire Department and the Department of Public Works are working to contain the fire area and to prevent any threat to neighboring communities.
  • Smoke conditions were moderate to heavy and due to a light sound wind; the smoke was being dispersed across the Puna and Hilo areas.
  • Construction activities on Railroad Avenue and Government Beach Road are continuing. These activities are to establish alternate road access in the event Highway 130 is affected by the lava flow.
  • The flow cannot be accessed and is not visible fromany public areas. Access to the Kaohe Homesteads remains restricted and limited to subdivision residents only.
  • Residents in smoke-affected areas are advised to avoid outdoor activities or physical exertion. People with respiratory illness or heart disease, or older adults and children are urged to avoid smoke exposure.
