KOKUA PHILIPPINES: A Fundraising Drive for Typhoon Maring Victims

The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu would like to appeal to the generosity and patriotism of the Filipino Community in Hawaii, American Samoa and French Polynesia to extend assistance to our kababayans in the Philippines who were affected by the widespread floods caused by rains brought about by the southwest monsoons and tropical storm Maring.

Maring first formed last 17 August and was the thirteenth tropical storm to hit the Philippines this year According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the total number of affected population to date is 367,894 families or 1,754,076 individuals in Regions I, III, IV-A, IV-B, CAR and NCR, the hardest hit areas.

The Filipino community in Hawaii, in partnership with the Philippine Consulate and the Filipino Community Center, is set to launch a fund-raising drive called Kokua Philippines (Help the Philippines) this weekend which will run from 22 August to 30 September 2013. Activities of this campaign include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Designating collecting areas in the Consulate and in major supermarkets and groceries and restaurants;
  • Conducting phone brigades;
  • Holding telethons with Filipino radio stations; and
  • Announcing the fundraising drive at every Filcom event and gathering.

To easily facilitate collection and auditing of donations, the Filipino community appeals that donors send monetary donations through cash or check.  Contributions are to be made in the name of the Filipino Community Center (note: 2013 Philippine typhoon relief).

The recipient organization, which will turn over funds to the victims in the Philippines, will be announced at a later date.
